Our plans

When it comes to having a back up plan, we had a few ideas if something stops us and how we as a group can prevent things like it. Let's say we couldn't film due to the rain or any other weather problems. We can try our best to reschedule and get everyone back together again to film. Or maybe change the location to make everything easier for us. Backups and archiving, disaster recovery, and business continuity are the three components of an effective backup plan. Backups and archiving on a regular basis should be your first line of defense. When data is created or modified, it should be backed up on a regular basis. And we will keep this in mind if we have to consider one. Despite the fact that we might not need one it won't hurt to be safe than sorry. When it comes to the safety of our team, that is what we will focus on the most. As we are going to be filming a horror film, a horror film in public. A lot of action can be taken out of context. This would be the last thing we wish to happen so we will keep it as PG as we can get. To stay away from any unwanted attention. location has yet to be officially decided and will be soon but I'm sure some will be taken in the park. What does health and safety mean in movies? Each organization has a legal obligation to have a "competent" health and safety person accessible to provide information to management as needed to guarantee a safe and healthy workplace. It is also a legal requirement to conduct risk assessments and safe work systems to ensure that filming takes place in a safe environment. So it's important to keep your actors and crewmates in a safe location and guarantee their safety. But that will be the last of this as I'm sure we were able to get the point across.

Drawing it out!

Within the opening scene of the film is an establishing shot. This establishing shot pans to the right and then tilts up to reveal the 2 characters. Both characters are seen in a medium shot to be in a conservation. As the scene continues the conservation becomes more heated and turns into an argument. The argument is shown through reverse shots which break once the MC runs off.

As the MC is running we get an over the shoulder scene and a reveal of the SC chasing after her. As the chase is revealed suspenseful music begins to play softly. The MC begins to move faster in an eye level angle. As she runs the music gets louder and more intense. Then we get an angle of her hip and down to her foot that transitions into a low angel of her running. As she runs the camera tilts and close up on her face. The sound of her out of breath breathing begins to over power the music.

The music stops and we can only hear her breathing. This allows the sound of a tree branch breaking to be singled out as the camera is set on a low angle to reveal the SC shoes. Then we get an extreme close up of a worried expression on the main character's face. Afterwards we get a long shot of her picking up pace and sprinting as the music returns.

After a while we get the view of the back of her head as she looks out at the scenery. The camera pans around her as we get a shot of her face where her eyes are seen to be looking around her surroundings. Then within a wide shot we see her turn messily. This turn ends up with her falling on the ground. We get a high angle of her sitting sadly on the ground then a close up of her injured hand. After the close up the music stops and only wind can be heard as she stares at her hand. We then receive a POV shot of the area.

Then the back of the SC legs is shown where the watcher is able to see the different shoe. The MC turns their head to the SC as they confront her in a high angle. The MC ends up pushing the SC and dashing away. The film ends with the SC on the ground with an annoyed face.

How should our title be?

Now when entering the stage of creating a title design we have discussed the way we wished for things to be like. We did research on how title screens are made and best equipment would be needed to do so. I'm positive we can be able to do good with it, I do believe in Vanessa sills in editing. When doing research I found great advice on how a title screen should be made and I'll like to share some with you. With the advent of streaming technologies, skipping the title sequence and getting straight to the plot is now easier than ever. On Netflix, for example, all you have to do is hit the "Skip Intro" button and you're done. This might be discouraging for creators on the production side of things. After all, you devote a significant amount of effort in post-production to mixing audio, adding motion graphics, and polishing intro sequences. You want the audience to be engrossed and hooked right away, thinking to themselves, "Wow, that was a wonderful title sequence."It helps to know how other filmmakers have experimented with visual design and editing methods throughout cinema to produce title sequences that are too excellent to skip. This is what a title screen is need for, and to create something like this is what we need. As I believe this is what we should focus on when brainstorming a title screen. However, as software and editing capabilities improved, directors began looking for new ways to elevate their title sequences and provide a more engaging viewing experience. If a film has a scary and unpleasant storyline (like Psycho), the visual design and music can predict this in the opening sequence. The same criteria apply to any other TV or film genre. The fact that an opening sequence has a thematic purpose and sets the tone for the rest of the production is what counts most these days, especially because title sequences are skippable on streaming services. Harry Potter is a well-known film series in modern cinema, particularly when it comes to title sequences. The opening scene for each of the eight films is distinct, starting with the one shown above. The Warner Bros. Pictures logo and the movie title were incorporated in all of the films' title sequences. The visual design and presentation of these components, on the other hand, are always unique. The title card for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is vividly lit with metallic letters. However, as the series goes, the Warner Bros. logo and title card get rusty or darkened. These design modifications are significant because they set a clear tone and theme for each picture.

How will it go?

Title Research: Romance

What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? Things that were displayed in the opening sequence of the Titanic are the Ocean, Boats, names of the crew members and actors. Their names are put there in means of credit for their performance.

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? Sound is crucial in a romance film because it allows the spectator to become absorbed in the many diverse circumstances depicted in horror films, as well as helping to set the mood of the picture and the environment around the characters on screen. Non-diegetic music is employed in the opening sequence of Titanic to reflect the story's original narrative events, and the song's strong but dismal presentation helps to contrast the ship's ultimate demise. The song is utilized to assist the audience associate the shot of the passengers waving goodbye to the rather sorrowful music, which helps to underline the scene shown behind it.

What connotations do these images carry?Titanic symbolizes the hardship and suffering that many immigrants encountered during this time period as they embarked on a journey over the Atlantic Ocean in search of a better life and a brighter future for themselves and their families.

How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset? Like many other couples before and after them, Jack and Rose come from two worlds, and during their hidden romance, Jack takes the initiative in overlapping and blending both worlds. He starts by dressing up to meet with Rose's peers, his seraph-sculpted visage atop a tuxedo making him look every bit the dashing gentleman. He really shines when he takes Rose to a real party, when he teaches her how to spit, and when he encourages Rose to let go of her Edwardian sense of propriety. It's exhilarating to have someone confront you like that. This was handled beautifully throughout the film, and it was able to demonstrate how this film is a romance.

 - What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

Titanic's success was driven by the power of entertainment popularity and entertainment journalism, and its favorable critical reaction also helped to bring spectators. Although few critics hailed Titanic as a masterpiece, it received mostly positive reviews. The melodrama had scared Fox that it wouldn't find an audience, but "when one examines the critics' assessments, it becomes evident that Titanic's popularity originated [from] the enormous range of its numerous parts," according to Matthew Bernstein. Titanic was praised by critics for being more than simply an estrogen-fueled romance; it was also a romance for fans of action movies and period dramas searching for a nostalgic memory of the past.

 - How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques. In order to tell a story, filmmakers link together shots with various compositions and camera angles. You can affect your audience's reaction by carefully setting your camera angle in each of those photos. As a result, you can impact how your audience interprets what's on screen.

Simply explained, this works because throughout the years, cinematographers have evolved a complicated visual vocabulary for storytelling. Simultaneously, audiences have become more aware of typical filming techniques and their implications.

Title Research: Fantasy

What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?A title sequence (also known as an opening sequence or intro) is a means of presenting a film or television show's title, as well as important production and cast members, through the use of innovative graphics and sound (often an opening theme song with visuals, akin to a brief music video). This is often seen in fiction work like Harry Potter and is often seen in their movies and many other ones as well.

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? In harry potter, there would be clips and images of characters that will take a big role in the film. Usually these characters are the main three, Harry, Ron and hermione. These being placed in the title screen or the opening gives credit where it's due for the audience to gather their attention and the crew mates as well.

What connotations do these images carry? According to cultural convention, imagery can represent feelings and mood. Words, sounds, and visuals have diverse connotations depending on one's cultural and personal background. Placement of one image next to another, such as juxtaposition in film editing, creates new interpretations. As an example in Harry potter, the coloring will darken in the opening sequence as it shows how darken the story has become. It gives the audience the visual image of how much has changed and how serious things have become for the characters.

How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset? Watching movies allows you to let go of your emotions. Even those who have difficulty expressing their feelings may find themselves laughing or crying while watching a movie. This emotional release can be cathartic, as well as making it easier for a person to become more comfortable expressing their feelings. By releasing cortisol and dopamine in the brain, movies help to alleviate anxiety and tension. When the movie is over, you can return to your problems, ready to confront them from a new viewpoint. Movies not only entertain and provide an escape, but they also have a significant impact on your health and behavior.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? In fundamental ways, the demographic characteristics of specialty cinema audiences differ from those of commercial film audiences. People in education or with higher educational credentials make up a significantly higher proportion of the population. The majority of the crowd is older, however teenagers (14-20 years old) rarely come.

How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques. Other Special effects can be used to speed up, change, freeze or slow down movement and time. In order to convey movement in time and push the story along, directors have to string different shots together into scenes, and string scenes together into the full movie.

Title research: Action

  1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequence to the film? Which ones?

Within Suicide Squad, a total of 34 titles are displayed on screen. The sequence includes the actors, directors, costume designers and producers.

  1. What connotations do the images carry? (how do they make you feel)?

The images give a sense of danger. The sequence begins with a scene that seems like things are being thrown at you immediately. Then the sequence begins to spin a multitude of objects that are associated with hazards for example, bullets, guns and bombs. Along with weapons, a showcase of skeletons and loose skulls began to show as the camera was drawn back. Another connection is the display of the actors. Along with the actors name prop are shows that refer to the character which contain weapons and fire.

  1. How is the genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? (can you tell what genre it is)

The genre is reinforced through sound and visuals. The song “Heathens” correlates to the genre. The beat along with the gun sound effects added in adds a sense of suspense and adaptation. Along with the beat, the meaning behind the lyrics hint at action. The use of the word heathen is used as a term to call a person who lacks basic morals. This single word tells the listener that this movie will be action filled with people who have no morals. Then the visual usage of explosions to introduce the actors along with guns, bullets and syringes inform the audience of an action pack movie.

  1. What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The conventions used in suicide squad is nolstolgia. The movie is based off of a team up within DC comics,  a popular comic publishing company. They included iconic characters like Joker and Harley Quinn. The usage of these well-known characters is that fans of them will attend. Along with popular characters, the opening song includes a popular band. The band, Twenty One Pilots, has a large fan base which draws a lot of people to the movie by association.

Title design research: Horror

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?

 Which ones?

In the opening sequence of the final destination there are 25 titles that are shown. They were designer, coordinator, music by, etc. They were used to give credit to the people who worked on the film.

What connotations do the images carry? (how do you they make you feel)

The connotations that the images carry are a scared and uneasy feeling. Seeing as though it is a horror movie that would be the case. The imagery used in the sequence is amazing. It shows people dying in x-ray vision. It is brutal and it is supposed to make you feel scared. It also made me feel concerned for the characters and what will happen to them. The images also made me feel scared for what I may witness as a viewer.

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

(Can you tell what genre the film is)

The way that the genre is reinforced is by the fact that the sequence in itself is incredibly brutal. It shows people dying in a somewhat “upsetting” way. It also gives the idea of what the movie will be like. Since the movies in the final destination always show people dying in horrible ways, the opening sequence does a good job of showing the idea of the film. It also does a good job of showing what the audience would find interesting/ exciting and entertaining.

What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The conventions that were used that ensured that the film appeals to its target audience were imagery,Typography, editing, and camera movement. The sequence looks “edgy” which would appeal to its audience. I feel like the target audience are males age 16-28, and the fact that it shows people dying would also appeal to them. They would also like the fact that it is really cool. They also made sure to move the camera in a way that would make sure that the audience keeps full attention to the opening sequence. It is also keeping them excited to see the rest of the film.

Title Website Research

Hello again. Currently we are working on researching title sequences that are basically always in films. A title is an important part of a film. It lets you know the people who worked on said film. They tell who the important people are and give credit to them. They tell you about the producers, actors, editors, etc. They are way more important than they may seem. They also give you the vibe of the film. The people who create them try to make sure of that. For example take a horror film, they are usually scary so they will try to show that in the title sequence. They would use effects to also enhance the sequence. These effects sometimes are 3d to also make it cool and exciting to the viewer. Also title sequences should hint or foreshadow at what is going to happen to the characters. They want to give the viewer a feeling of excitement or make them want to see what happens later in the film. Features that are typically found in these title sequences are Typography, Editing, Imagery, etc. They are used to enhance the sequence so it isn’t boring or interesting. Some title sequences that people find really well done are Dawn of the Dead(2004) and Deadpool. They use some of the features that were mentioned. They also foreshadow what the film will be like. For example the Deadpool title sequence includes someone being shot. The movie itself is just as violent, and the title did a good job at showing that.

Heathers research

For the final movie choice that we as a group have chosen, it will be Heathers. A classic among drama and mean girls themed movies. Though there is a play that came after the movie, we won't be using any material from that but focus on the movie's canon. The film follows four young girls in a clique at an Ohio high school, three of which are called Heather, one of whose lives is shattered when a sociopath arrives intent on murdering the popular kids and faking their deaths as suicides. "A picture is worth a thousand words," as the saying goes. That is, after all, a fantastic example of what mise-en-scene is in the film industry. In essence, mise-en-scene is the idea that by looking at still photos from a movie, an audience member may gain a sense of the characters' connections and situations. These visuals are created by elements in a scene, such as the arrangement of performers, sets, costumes, make-up, and lighting, that are set in place before the scene begins and utilized in a certain way during filming. The usage of low angles is another aspect of cinematography in this film. The camera in low angle framing points upward toward the character. The camera perspective descends to a low position after Veronica and J.D. murder someone. This viewpoint provides the audience with a unique perspective. It portrays Veronica's uncertainty and guilt for what has transpired, especially in terms of how she feels. It adds an element of turmoil to J.D.'s life, such as when he's fleeing through the woods chasing Ram. Blood and violence are two things that come to mind when thinking about horror movies. Heathers, on the other hand, isn't a horror film by definition. A mediocre comedy is transformed into a dark comedy by the presence of frightening components. There are lots of laugh-out-loud moments, such as Heather C.'s "fuck me softly with a chainsaw." However, underlying themes of teen suicide, psychopathic tendencies, and school shootings/bombings run throughout the film. This film parodies some of the heavier issues.

Get Out research

For the next movie that we decided to research in the thriller genre is Get Out. Get Out is a horror thriller that was released in 2017. A basic synopsis of the movie is that a black man is meeting his white girlfriends parents for the first Time. He thinks that the reason that her parents are nervous is because of their interracial relationship. He soon discovers that isn't the case, and that her family transplants their brains into other peoples bodies to live longer as well as for their physical characteristics. So he then must find a way to get out. The movies main message is about racism. The film consistently uses POV shots in order to put your self in Chris's(main character)position and look through his eyes. One example of this is when Chris is outside and he sees movement in the grass, we then see him squint and then we see a POV shot of a man running towards him. This shot makes the watcher feel like they are in the situation and that the man is running towards them. The certain shot builds suspense/fear of what is going to happen. Another use of a POV shot in the movie is when Chris is in the "sunken place"(dark place in his mind) he can see the world through a screen. We then get the POV to make it feel as though we are there and we can see how he is seeing things.

The movies also uses quite a few close up shots. Within the movie they are used to show extreme feeling and importance/significance in the movie. An example of this is when Chris is being hypnotized and there is a close up on his face. Within that close up we can vividly see how he is feeling. We can see how scared, afraid, and conceded he is about his current situation. We the audience can feel the what he was feeling through that shot. The movie also has multiple uses of certain sound techniques to enhance the film. For example to film have constant uses of diagetic sound and non- diagetic sounds that are used throughout the film. They are used to bring the viewer an uneasy feeling while watching, among other things.

Thriller movies

For the first movie we researched, we watched Jurassic world. The movie is an action thriller that was released in 2015. The movie is about a resort that houses artificial dinosaurs that break free. The movie uses a lot of high angles, over the shoulder shots, wide shots, medium close up shots, and closes up along with extreme close up. For example the scene where the T-rex is attacking the sphere with the two boys begins with a tilt then a low angle as the T-rex is revealed. Then when the sphere is attacked and begins spinning we view an over the shoulder scene which transitions into a medium close up shot. The editing helps make these scenes more impactful. For example in the scene where Owen, the main character, along with two other workers are in a cage that actually had a T-rex in it. The T-rex begins to chase them which the editors put in cross cutting, cutaways, and jump cuts. The scene also uses a lot of non-diegetic sound i.e background music to make it more tense along with sound motifs.

Along with diverse shots and editing, the movie also has many mise-en-scene. The set is set up as a forest and a luxury theme park. The lighting is usually kept dark with multiple flashing bright lights along with smoke. The costumes generally stay the same but the make up makes the characters seem more run down, dirty and injured.

All of these elements help bring the genre, thriller, into the movie by making the film tense and anxiety ridden. These elements must be included in our final task to allow it to be classified as a thriller. The usage of sound and also the lack of sound is a key part in this film with its effect. The biggest thing in this film that we are going to stir away from is the usage of special effects. The film uses special effects to animate the dinosaurs, along with the objects in the location breaking. Since we are simply high school students we have decided to not use special effects to the same advancery.

Our final choice

After we have researched and thought about the three different genres we have come to a conclusion. Our conclusion is that thriller will work best for us. We had compare the pros and cons between the three and thriller came out with only one major con.

The only con for thriller was the setting. Typically, thrillers are filmed in locations that are scary and suspenseful, we may not be able to achieve this effect. Simply because of the fact that we are high school students which limits accessibility and safety to remote locations. Similarly, horror has the same problem but to a more extreme. The biggest difference between horror and thriller, is that horror is far more gory which is why a secluded area is needed to not disturb passing civilians. While with drama, the genre is too character center which would complicate things. Horror would also suffer the same consquences since it would be very difficult to try to explain and film a murder scene within the two minute introduction scene.

The pros for thrillers also outweigh the pros for horror and drama. The biggest pros with both drama and horror is the atmosphere they create. They both create two drastic atmospheres yet make the same effect of making the watcher sit on the edge of their chairs. However their pros do not outweigh thriller’s pro. Thriller’s pro is the use of sound, angles and lighting to make the genre come to life.

To us, this pro is deemed very important. Our past assignments we had only used basic music and basic sunlight. Along with only including angles that were demanded of us. We believe that the opportunity to explore different techniques with sound, edits and camera angles will bring our media journey to a successful conclusion. We wish for our final task to be one of the best we will create in our high school career.

What a horror!

One genre, we as a group researched was horror. We had been thinking about making one of our assignments one of horror since the music video. If we were to do a horror introduction we will need to include, a high angle, close ups, tracking shots, reverse shots, tilted angles, and low angles. Horror movies also tend to use hand held cameras especially during intense scenes.

There is typically two types of horror costumes. One in which the character uses a childish aesthetic to hide their murderous intentions and then the other one is the serious side that is filled with more grays and blacks along with typical white masks. The make up in horror tends to be bold and unnatural and tend to make the skin seem washed out. In nearly all horror films there is a prop weapon involve. There is also a lot of flashing lights.

The editors tend to edit in special effects, cross cuts, jump cuts and cutaways. Editors also input the sound in the horror film for example sound motif, diegetic sound, and sound bridges. You can find these examples within the Nun, it 2, the Empty Man and Fear Street.

The elements of horror that we like is the aspect of it. The idea that one can find creepy and disturbing things entertaining is intriguing. Not to mention, the ways we'll get to explore our environments and editing skills.

The biggest thing we don't like is how difficult it would be to include a murder scene in the introduction of a film. It would feel very out of place and strange for it to just be a murder scene. Not to mention, it would be difficult to find fake blood during the beginning of the year. Another thing would be finding a location where we will have a good atmosphere but also won't bother other people. We don't want to get in trouble for pretending to fake murder someone.

Too much drama!

The next genre that our group settled on is Drama, there's a lot of drama shows that we all have watched and enjoyed so the genre seems like it could fit. When thinking about shots that would be needed if we chose to do a drama for our topic of interest. We expected that we would need Two Shots, Wide shot, Long shots when looking at the person and the locations that they are in. Of course we knew that the shots and angles that are taken show the tension in the scenes so it is very necessary. We'll have a few images of people on the ground or in their beds where we'll only be shooting their faces or even their eyes through extreme close-ups. Their faces will be the only thing in the frame, but from above. The object/character is taken from above or at a higher angle in a birds eye or high angle shot. These are commonly employed to gain perspective or to convey that a character or object has less significance than another. But to go into more detail on what drama is in movies. Drama is characterized by stories with high stakes and numerous conflicts. They're plot-driven, and every character and scene must advance the plot. Dramas have a well-defined plot structure, depicting real-life settings or severe situations with emotionally charged characters.

To show this I would like to introduce the movie Joker. The 2019 movie that was the highlight of its year and the years after it was released. The message carries such a hard message that hits every when it's knowened. What do you think the message of the Joker movie is? The Joker is a cruel film that leaves fans watching Arthur Fleck be beaten down by the streets, the system, and his own mental health difficulties.

Joker was shot on Alexa 65, Alexa LF, and Alexa Mini cameras in ARRIRAW 4k at 1.85:1 aspect ratio, according to our study. Although the resolution differed from camera to camera, they were all shot open gate and the 39672160 part extracted. After that, the clip was edited in Avid MC v8.

What a thriller!

Hello! Seeing as though we need a certain type of genre for our final task, my group an I had a dissuasion about it. We have different ideas in mind. One of those being a thriller. One of the main points of a thriller is to have the viewer at the edge of their seat. It needs to be exciting and or suspenseful. Some of the common camera angles that are present in a thriller are high angles, low angles, canted angles, wide shots, close ups and extreme close up among others. All of these angles can be used to create the suspense that is usually present in most thrillers. Some Mis-en scenes that are used in a thriller is for one the use of lighting. To make the viewer feel suspense the lighting would be more darker and not brightly lit. Also there will mostly be a setting that would make the viewer nervous. The it comes to the editing of a thriller is is sure to be jumps cuts, elliptical editing, shot reverse shot, and parallel editing. These are used to make the viewer feel like they are within the film. They cause the viewer to be alert thinking something will happen. And keeping them on their toes. Thrillers also tend to add the sounds of the weather such as rain and wind so the viewer can feel the setting. They also add heavy breathing of the characters so the viewers can feel the tension that they feel. Some popular examples of thinners are Scream, The silence of the lambs, Get out, and Black swan. These are all really popular thrillers that use a lot of the things that were mentioned. The elements of thrillers that I like and would uses are the sound devices if possible and the lighting and angles to bring our finial task feel alive and interesting as well as suspenseful. The only thing I would say away from within the thriller is a scary or suspenseful location seeing as though it may not be possible for me and my group to do.Best Thriller Movies | Fandom Insights

What should we do?

We recognize that our original idea may not work for a number of reasons. Which is why we decided to come up with a back up plan. The back up plan will give off more of an isolated atmosphere. The idea is to film someone wearing ragged clothes and disheveled hair walking alone in an uncomfortable environment. We will have title captions appear on the environment in which they are running. We will use silence to help with the feelings. Then when the person steps on something breakable we will make it loud. At the end it will show the person chasing the other person then the name of the director will show. The person who is chasing after the other will wear a ski mask. Along with the reveal of the chaser we will have the silence break and be replaced with the runner breathing heavily. Our second pitch is to have there being a person running from people that are trying to hurt/harm them. It would be taking place on a sidewalk. The person would look tired to show that they have been running for a while. It would be shot in a way that would make the viewer feel like “woah, what is happening”. That feeling would make them get more interested and want to find out what happens next. I was also thinking that after the person runs we see them hide behind a corner. After hiding behind the corner we would see a title and the opening credits would start. I decided that this would be a good pitch to use because it is an interesting concept. It is something that grabs your focus and makes you want to know more.
